Passage

2016 oil on board 24"x24"

private collection

This is the hallway on the third floor of the IU Fine Arts building where I used to go for figure drawing every Monday evening. It's typically lit like an oppressive office full of cubicles ... blaring green fluorescent ... no shadows anywhere. For some reason the lighting had to be replaced and one Monday this past summer I stepped out of the elevator and found it under construction... dark, mysterious, yet inviting as the work lights trailed down into the distance. I made a joke to another another artist about painting it this way and the seed was planted. I returned a week later with my paints in tow. I consider this one of my first nocturnes even though it was painted indoors.
